Road project to create access to refugees in Liberia

10.02.11

Hundreds of refugees from Côte d’Ivoire continue to cross the border to safety in neighbouring Liberia every day. However, providing aid to the host communities and refugees in rural areas of Liberia is often complicated by bad infrastructure. In collaboration with the Liberian Government and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the Danish Refugee Council will now start the improvement of road access to isolated communities in Liberia.

Liberian communities struggle to host Ivorian refugees arriving in increasing numbers. Among the host communities are villages in rural and isolated areas cut off from aid as roads are damaged and impassable. New assessments have stressed the urgent need for improved access to isolated areas with Liberian communities hosting refugees from neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire.

"The joint project is crucial for the international aid agencies to be able to reach out to the host communities and the Ivorian refugees. Therefore, we are of course pleased that it has been agreed to launch the repair of roads and bridges in these most isolated areas," says Ann Mary Olsen who is head of the international department with the Danish Refugee Council.

Providing food, shelter materials, and other relief items to communities in Nimba County will now be significantly improved with the joint project agreed upon by the Liberian Government and with the support for the Danish Refugee Council from the UNHCR.
