Ahead of the European Council on 23 and 24 June, NGOs urges EU to give a strong signal of solidarity with North Africa and with those in need of international protection. As member of the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE), the Danish Refugee Council is part the appeal urging Heads of State and Goverments to do more and better.
As the humanitarian crisis in Libya worsens and its impact on the neighbouring countries increases, the EU response to the developments in the region and towards the needs of refugees fleeing the area has been so far disappointing. The NGOs ask the EU to show true political leadership by providing a solid and generous response.
In particular, NGOs call on the EU and its Member States to offer resettlement places in significant numbers to the most vulnerable refugees fleeing Libya, to continue ensuring access to the territory and to a fair asylum procedure to those arriving in the EU, to engage in concrete solidarity and responsibility sharing with those EU country most directly affected by the migrant and refugee arrivals, and to support countries in North Africa to build their asylum systems and ensure protection.
